International Hiroshima Conference on Caring and Peace

HOME

Greetings

On behalf of the Watson Caring Science Institute and its founder, Dr. Jean Watson, a world authority on nursing caring theory and Caring Science, I am pleased to announce that the International Hiroshima Conference on Caring and Peace will be held in Hiroshima, on March 24 -25, 2012. Hiroshima is the first city ever to experience the horrors of atomic bombing and houses the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. The main theme of the conference is "Caring and Peace" and the venue will be the Japanese Red Cross Hiroshima College of Nursing.

The conference programs over the two days will include a special lecture by Dr. Watson, speeches and a symposium on caring and peace. We will also host preconference sessions. The Caring Island Kyushu-Okinawa Conference, to which Dr. Watson and other Distinguished Professors will be invited, will be held on the afternoon of March 23, 2012. Moreover, extension courses with no charge will be held at the Hiroshima Prefectural Culture Center. In order to facilitate thorough discussions and lively exchange of opinions among participants regarding the themes of caring and peace, research presentations will be limited to poster sessions. Instead, there will be various ‘Interactive gatherings’ and experience-based exhibits for caring and healing.

With the belief that the spirit and practical ability of caring can bring about peace, I hope that this conference will provide us with an opportunity to showcase the role of nursing for the cause of peace, and at the same time, to think about what nursing care can do for peace. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you both in Japan and abroad and look forward to meeting you at the conference.

Lastly, I would like to express my heartfelt condolences and sympathy to all of those who have been affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011. Although we were preparing to host the conference in June, 2011, the current situation necessitated a rescheduling of the conference. We apologize for any inconvenience this rescheduling may have caused you. I hope things are back to normal as soon as possible.

Sachie Shindo,
Chairperson,
International Hiroshima Conference on Caring and Peace
